Why Choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon?

With cosmetic procedures so widely available, it’s crucial to pay special attention to who you entrust to be your plastic surgeon. Not all providers are created equal, and the chances of complications and negative outcomes are significantly minimized when patients ensure they’re enlisting a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform their procedure(s).

“Board-certified” signifies accreditation from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) — a credential only awarded to physicians who have not only undergone residencies in plastic and reconstructive surgery, but have also completed rigorous written and oral examinations to demonstrate their knowledge. Board certification also requires critical evaluation of a surgeon’s ethical standing and approach to safety and patient care. The ABPS also re-tests for accreditation every ten years to ensure plastic surgeons maintain their certification. All in all, selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon to achieve your results can give you the confidence of knowing you’re under the care of someone who offers the highest caliber of safety and training in aesthetic plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgeon vs. Cosmetic Surgeon

While many areas of plastic and cosmetic surgery overlap, these two fields do not always go hand in hand. Cosmetic surgery focuses exclusively on adjusting anatomy to enhance appearance. In contrast, plastic surgery involves repairing birth defects, restoring function, and reconstructing natural anatomy after cancer removal surgery on top of improving aesthetics. That said, a plastic surgeon typically has a deeper understanding of anatomical function and undergoes training in a wider breadth of surgical procedures when compared to a cosmetic surgeon. Men and women who are considered a plastic surgeon receive instruction in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, whereas a cosmetic surgeon is not qualified to perform reconstructive procedures.
